Position Title: Gardens & Grounds Technician
Status: Part-time seasonal
Schedule: 20 hours/week April-October with occasional weekend hours
Compensation: $16/hour; paid holidays; cell phone stipend; workshop discount
Position Summary
If you’ve got a green thumb and enjoy cultivating a welcoming atmosphere in a magical outdoor
setting, this seasonal position at Shake Rag Alley Center for the Arts is for you. Reporting to the
Executive Director and Buildings and Grounds Committee, and working collaboratively with
Shake Rag Alley staff and volunteers, the Gardens & Grounds Technician will participate in the
opening and closing of our 20 garden beds and seasonal garden and grounds maintenance.

Primary Responsibilities Include:
? using general gardening knowledge and proper techniques, performing a variety of
gardening work including planting, grooming, weeding, transplanting, and deadheading
plants on our 2.5-acre campus in the historic heart of Mineral Point.
? mowing and edging lawns, using power mower and edger, and caring for established lawns
by mulching, aerating, weeding, feeding, and trimming and edging around flower beds,
walks, and walls.
? maintaining diverse plantings of trees, shrubs, perennials, and annuals.
? helping to maintain grounds including paths, streambed, patios, and outdoor Alley Stage
amphitheater.
? hand watering and maintaining proper irrigation especially in times of drought.
? fertilizing and applying herbicide to floral and foliage plants when needed and inspecting
and treating plants.
? safely using a wide array of hand tools including but not limited to pruning shears, rakes,
shovels, irrigation hoses, and watering nozzles.
? problem-solving related to historic buildings and grounds.
? becoming immersed in the daily groundskeeping operations of a nationally known arts
education organization in a one-of-a-kind historic and artistic community.
? other duties as assigned to include supporting programming, and assisting other staff with
projects.
Preferred Qualifications:
? Relevant experience and demonstrated knowledge of technical practices and materials
used in gardening, preferably in a nonprofit and/or historic setting, or a combination of
education and experience relevant to the position.
? Ability to interpret instructions, specifications, etc., and safely use and maintain basic
landscape management tools.
? Ability and willingness to work outside in all kinds of weather in suitable clothing.
? Ability to perform primary responsibilities without more than normal supervision.

? Strong interpersonal and communication skills and ability to foster cooperative relationships
with staff, volunteers, Board members, contractors, vendors, and the general public.
? Computer and Internet proficiency to include Gmail and Google Drive.
? Ability to multi-task and switch priorities of projects as needs of job change as a member of
a team and independently.
? Ability to understand and follow policies and procedures and report to work on time to
complete scheduled shifts.
? An affinity for working in an atmosphere of creativity while demonstrating flexibility,
friendliness, problem-solving skills, and patience in all situations.

weather conditions prevalent at the time. The noise level in the work environment is
usually moderate.
